7 Year Old Brazilian Samba Queen

Little Julia Lira isn't old enough to stay home alone or stay up late, but a Brazilian court has ruled that a seven-year-old girl can dance the samba in front of a crowd of thousands as a Rio Carnival drum corps queen. [Source: TelegraphUK] Keeping in mind the culture of Brazil, was it appropriate for people to be up in arms about Little Julia's role as samba queen?  Read the full story here.

NG: It's disturbing for a child that young to be exposed to the sexual nature of the carnival.

TF: I think this is an interesting issue, particularly for Americans and a lot of people evidently share your point of view. So much so that this went to court (although the opposers lost). I think Brazil (in general) has a far more relaxed point of view about sexuality, much like many parts of Europe. I'm not sure that a 7 year old child raised in Brazilian culture (i.e., doing the samba or hanging out at the beach) would be looked upon sexually; just like I don't think a 7 year old Brazilian child looks at samba dancers at carnival and thinks about anything sexual. Interesting subject...

NG: I would also worry about her safety. There's so many people that go to carnival. I would think her dad would worry about other men touching her or saying something that she shouldn't be hearing.

TF: I respect your opinion. I don't think for one minute that this child's parents are not concerned for her safety and or that they won't take the necessary precautions just like you or I would. It's a custom that samba schools (the dad is the owner of the school) present at Carnival. It's a REALLY BIG deal and common to the culture. I think she performed already. I'll have to google it.
