Just A Drop

I am in the U.K. at World Travel Market London, the leading global event for the travel industry.  Being here feels like I'm on top of the world...literally.

World travel excitement aside, I am always pleased to learn about any humanitarian effort that saves lives.  This one in particular is associated with the Caribbean Village area at WTM London represented by Antigua & Barbuda, Dominican Republic, Saint Lucia, St. Kitts, St. Vincent & The Grenadines, Trinidad & Tobago and the Caribbean Tourism Organisation where you are able to donate £1 (less than US$2) in exchange for a glass of rum punch (of course you don't have to drink it).  It's called Just A Drop, a venture to help countries have access to clean life-saving water and it's a travel industry charity that's doing good.

Here are four facts I took away from a video presentation being shown on the other side of the Just a Drop exhibit pictured above:
  • 884 million people don't have access to clean safe water.
  • 2.6 billion people don't have access to adequate sanitation.
  • A child dies every 20 seconds because of polluted water.
  • Polluted water is the biggest killer of children under the age of 5.
Horrible stats.  Great initiative.  And they have a special place in my heart because like me, they have not forgotten about Haiti.  In fact, they've put aside £165,000 of funding from travel-related companies to help.  You can read more about that here.

As you know, OneBrownGirl.com® celebrates humanitarian efforts and to that end, I am celebrating Just a Drop.  If you'd like to find out how you can help, please click here.  You won't get a rum punch, but you will have made a difference.  Thanks for listening.  =)
