When I started OneBrownGirl.com® in 2007, I had this vision that I could bring together Brown Girls across all culturally diverse landscapes - along with the people who love us - to celebrate our cultural similarities. And because we all tend to naturally celebrate among our own cultural groups, it's been hard. Especially when I finally put my photo on the blog (which I didn't want to do). Folks automatically thought it was only for girls who look like me. #wronggggg
Today, however, I am pleased over the moon to announce that Brown Girl Magazine (serving South Asian-American girls & women), Brown Girl Collective (serving African-American girls & women), and Multicultural Familia (serving the multicultural community) have all partnered with OneBrownGirl.com® to prove that not only can Brown Girls collaborate, but that #BrownGirlsGive as well. #passmesometissue
ANNOUNCING OUR NEWEST CAUSE
After donating close to 200 pairs of shoes (!) to Soles4Souls during #BrownGirlsGive's first collective effort, it's time to announce a new cause. Starting today and ending December 31, 2012, the four of us (and our advocates) will not only work to recruit 500 members on the #BrownGirlsGive Facebook page, but we will give 100 new or gently used clean coats to those in need via One Warm Coat®. As a collective, if 100 of us each gave just one coat, imagine the impact. #justimagine

So. For those of you in the United States and Canada, do this for us please:
2. Go into your closet and find a gently used coat that you (or your children) haven't worn in forever. Check the pockets for spare change (smiling). In the alternative, and if it's your preference, you can buy a new coat for donation.
4. Pin a note to it that says #BrownGirlsGive and take a photo.
5. Then find out where to drop off your new or gently worn clean coat in your community by clicking here.
6. Drop it off. (Suggestion: Call ahead to confirm the drop-off location you have selected in the event it takes more than 5 minutes to get there. We don't want you to make a wasted trip.)
7. Send your photo to Tracey@OneBrownGirl.com so I can post it. (By sending it to me, you acknowledge that all of us have the right to blast your images all over the Internet.)
8. Spread the word about giving via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, email, or even by telephone (imagine that). Social media folks should use the hashtag #BrownGirlsGive.
9. Think about how good it feels to give and treat yourself to something special for being so thoughtful. =)
If you are not on Facebook, you are not forgotten! Please leave your first name, home state and donation details in the Comments section of this post so we can count you as advocates and follow the instructions (2-9 above).
On behalf of myself, Brown Girl Collective, Brown Girl Magazine and Multicultural Familia, thank you x 4. Giving matters. It matters a lot.
