The Top 5 Travel Necessities No Travelista Should Live Without

Tuesday, February 05, 2013

Welp.  It looks like the Traveling Brown Girls Blog Carnival is back in town!  This time, travelista extraordinaire Monique White Rubin of Mo Travels is serving as Carnival Host just like past hosts April, Carol and yours truly.
Monique White Rubin, Carnival Host
Monique is an American expatriate that's been living in The Netherlands for over 13 years and most recently, we mixed business with pleasure in a Go With Oh apartment during World Travel Market London.  And while she's a traveling runner that rocks a wicked running skirt, today she's donning her Carnival hat and collecting stories from other Traveling Brown Girls like me that boast our Top 5 Travel Necessities No Travelista Should Live Without.  =)  Here goes nuffin...

1.  A wrap.

It might be 100+ degrees outside, but step inside an airport or have a seat on an airplane for 5 minutes, and you'll likely be searching for something to keep you warm.  For the life of me, I don't know why it's always so cold on airplanes, but I have two really nice wool wraps from Cairo to choose from and ultimately bundle up in, and I believe every travelista should have a wool wrap. Whether I'm traveling to the Caribbean or through Iceland, I just don't leave home without it.

2.  An awesome toiletries kit.

Joy Mangano of HSN fame should really pay me give me some type of discount for my frequent testimonials about her fantastic Better Beauty Case because I absolutely love it!  Two out of the four compartments separate from the bag via velcro strips and I love that I can roll it up and keep it moving.  I keep one fully stocked at all times so I don't have to spend time packing and unpacking. I haven't seen or used anything better.  Ever.

3.  Pocket Wi-Fi

Besides the obvious technology - cell phone, laptop, camera, etc. - ever since I stole borrowed April's portable Wi-Fi unit at World Travel Market London, I find that I can't travel without one - particularly since I'm fairly obsessive about using social media to share my travels.  I like it because I can just drop it in my purse and go.  Just so happens I'm on the hunt for a company other than Tep Wireless (servicing Europe) as I'll be traveling to Barbados and Brazil soon.  Any suggestions?

4.  Cute Sneakers

Staying in shape is important; ergo working out when I travel is important too, right?  I always bring gym clothes and a pair of cute sneakers with me when I travel.  Doesn't mean I always use them; but at least I bring them. #teehee

5.  A passport.

I know this is a no-brainer, but hey...I've got a thing for passports.  *Eye twinkle*

So now you know mine.  What about you?  What necessities are a must-have in your travel life?

Yeah, they should pay you. I'm seriously considering buying that one. It's cute and compact! :-)

Will send you details on a pocket wifi option.

Get it, April! You get 2 of them when you place an order; one big, one small. I use the other one for jewelry.

Got your email too. Thanks! (As always.). :-)

Those sneakers are KILLER! Love! And I am in love with pretty much every compact packing item you post. *Swoon*

Thanks for the love, Carol! Those sneakers are just PERFECT for the hotel treadmill, don't you think? *snicker*

Yes to the entire list, but I can truly testify to a wrap, sneakers and passport, because I have shown up to the airport once WITHOUT mine. Not fun.

Okay. That doesn't sound fun AT ALL, Monique!

That Kit looks fabulous if a tad too big for budget travelling but I still want it!

Amen to the wraps, I need to buy a wool one or just a heavier one because me and wool aren't friends.

When I ordered the Better Beauty case, I got a small one and a big one plus 2 courtesy pouches. Since you can remove 2 of the pouches via Velcro, those might fit nicely in a back pack and then when it's time to whip out the suitcase, you'll have the whole shebang!

Maybe a chenille wrap would keep you warm? I have friends allergic to wool, no matter what the quality is, so I can relate.

So, I'm not the only one who they freeze on the airplane! I'm always eager to shut off that air blower thingamagig when I take my seat. I used to enjoy the airplane blankets, but they have disappeared. :-( A wrap is a great replacement.

Heck no, Michaela! You are NOT alone.
Airplane blankets are way too thin, although in business class I think they're a little fluffier. Either way, I'm not leaving home without my wrap. I can even roll that puppy up and make a pillow if necessary! #multipurpose ;-)

So that toiletry bag is the business. And, it's great that you keep one fully stocked. Grab and go!

Considering my obsession with a sarong, I'm totally on board with your #1 item (the wrap)!

As for a passport, I'd expect nothing less on your list ;-)

Thanks for this list, Tracey! :-)
