The New York Times made its "Of Color" Holiday Gift Guide available to the general public a day or so ago and the Guide is creating quite a frenzy in some circles. Some have even referred to the Gift Guide, aimed at consumers of color, as racist. Details about the story can be found here. Are the people at the New York Times who put together the Of Color Holiday Gift Guide racist because the Guide targets certain cultural groups?

Uh, NO! Too much emphasis is placed on race for minute things such as this. There are much greater issues where this would be a valid concern.

I heard about the "racist gift list" and thought I would take a look myself. I must be fitting the stereotype. I'm buying the "Wise Latina" tee offered by Latina magazine for myself. A comment taken out of context and used to try to end Sotomayor's Supreme Court bid. When read in the context of the speech it makes perfect sense. Too often we are upbraided for not commenting on our heritage /ethnicity (think Jessica Alba early in her career) however we are also castigated for embracing who we are (Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor). Race/ethnicity/identity can be touchy, and will continue to be until we feel comfortable enough in our own skin to relax and have an open dialoge. Until then, I'll be wearing my OBG shirts and my "Wise Latina" gift to myself.
