Paying Homage

Now THIS is Blackface.
I'm so sick of folks turning artistic cultural homages into that same old tired "Blackface" argument.  Grrrrr.

This time, it's about Beyoncé's homage to the beauty of African ancestry in the super fabulous! L'Officiel Paris video below.  Talk about making something out of nothing!  Sheesh.  Click here to read about the backlash.

Remember when Tyra's America's Next Top Model was under fire for a similar type of homage?  I don't know about you, but I'm over it.  If someone doesn't know the difference between yester year's Blackface and a celebration of culture, then phooey on them.  #getalife  Work it Bey!

Wow is there anything she can't do. Beautiful! All I see is cultural pride and great shoes.

From Facebook:
Phyllis Lohar-Singh Maybe i got up too late, but I really don't see the big deal? Really....who cares she is an artist.
Tracey Friley I agree, Phyllis. And I woke up early.
Stacie Walton I humbly disagree. Art is interpretive. Meaning the lens you look through is a reflection of the life stories that condense into your own perspective. Some of us have stories that cause grief in a deep place because of that particular im...age. Therefore, its really difficult to recognize the art through the painful memories/feelings that surface when we see the image. I do however respect that your perspective might differ from mine.
Tracey Friley Smiling at Stacie. You're right. It is ultimately about perspective. I guess I don't share the scars or hold on to pain. I've never been one to do that...
