"It is the people who must save the environment. It is the people who must make their leaders change. So we must stand up for what we believe in."
-Wangari Maathai
1 April 1940 – 25 September 2011
2004 Nobel Peace Prize winner, environmental champion and women's rights activist Wangari Maathai passed away today.  She was the founder of The Green Belt Movement, "a non-profit grassroots non-governmental organization (NGO) based in Kenya...whose mission is to mobilize community consciousness- using tree planting as an entry point- for self-determination, equity, improved livelihoods and security, and environmental conservation."  As an advocate of environmental stewardship, I am saddened by her loss but encouraged by her strength, her determination and her work.  If you didn't know who she was, it's never too late to learn...and grow.  Her legacy lives on.

She leaves such an amazing legacy. My kids learned a bit about her through a book we discovered at the Nobel Peace Center a few months ago.

She does indeed, Monique. I'm hoping to plant a tree in her memory this weekend. =)
